Dog-Friendly Beaches in South Devon

Here in South Devon, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to long, sandy beaches and pebbled coves. Many of our local beaches welcome dogs year-round, and their unmatched natural beauty and dog-friendly atmosphere are a must-see during your holiday. Here’s our pick of the best local beaches to explore with your best friend.

Maidencombe Beach

Surrounded by red sandstone cliffs and littered with rock pools, this peaceful beach is within a short walk of Torquay and just 15 minutes away from Devon Valley. Maidencombe is a wonderful place for swimming with safe, clear waters, and a Seaside Award as proof. You and your furry friend will delight in a paddle and a stroll.

This restful stretch of sandy beach is far removed from the hustle and bustle of the town. With great access to coastal paths, why not extend your route along the rugged coastline of Torquay seafront?

Babbacombe Beach

Babbacombe Beach is a tranquil shingle beach set beneath the wooded cliffs of Babbacombe Downs, just 20 minutes away from Devon Valley. Famed for being the highest promenade in England, a stroll along the Downs reveals dramatic views of the coastline for you to enjoy whilst your furry friend runs about the green.

The beach is accessible down either a steep woodland path or the Babbacombe Cliff Railway for a convenient ride and unforgettable views. Only Oddicombe Beach, neighbouring Babbacombe at the bottom of the railway, bans dogs from 1st May to 31st September, so a walk along the connecting coves and beaches makes for a wonderful day out with your dog.

Man Sands Beach

The lesser-known beach of Man Sands is a peaceful and secluded pebble beach 10 minutes from the town of Kingswear. The closest car park is half a mile away, allowing you and your four-legged friend a walk in the fresh Devonshire air before reaching the coves and rockpools of the beach.

The beach is surrounded by rolling grassland and rocky slopes, as well as a lagoon home to a variety of birds and a National Trust bird hide. Man Sands can also be accessed via Sharkham Point along the coastal path. A great beach for nature lovers and those looking for a quieter day out. Should you wish to go for a swim, be mindful that rip currents can occur on the turning high tide.

Please remember to always do your own research before heading out to any local beaches, to check access routes, facilities, nearby parking, and specific safety instructions. Check out Teignmouth’s RNLI for more information on sea and beach safety. We hope you have a great and safe day out with your four-legged friend.
